Our mission is to take broad approaches toward examining media and diversity with regard to the complexity of social group identities and experiences. We aim to make recommendations to promote socially productive portrayals in the landscape of modern media. In so doing, we hope to contribute to addressing the roles of media in influencing prejudice and social stigma in society.
To accomplish these goals, we:
- Conduct innovative research on both the diversity of representations in traditional and digital media as well as the effects on beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and policy support.
- Train future generations to understand and appreciate social scientific inquiry and encourage their interest in studying issues of media and diversity.
- Facilitate conversations about media and diversity through discussion, collaborations, and presentations by MDC research teams and invited speakers.
- Build relationships with organizations to promote community-based media literacy initiatives.
